How to Build a Ground Level Wood Walkway Through Your Yard

An informal walkway made of wood is a great way to welcome guests into your yard. You can reuse a fallen tree by cutting it into sections to create the foundation for your walkway. The cut sections are set on their ends and filled in with gravel and sand to create a stepping stone effect. The wooden sections are positioned into the ground to create a walkway that is level with the surrounding area. This walkway is easy to make and adds a rustic feel to your yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 6-inch-thick rounds from a fallen tree with a chainsaw. Create a trench that is 8 inches deep and as wide as you would like your walkway to be.

    • 2

Mix sand and gravel together. Pour a 2-inch layer of the mix over the excavated area. Level the sand gravel mix with a piece of lumber.

    • 3

Position the 6-inch wood rounds into the gravel and sand mix. Twist the rounds until they stand level in the ground and are even with the rest of the rounds. Space each round 1 to 3 inches away from one another. Continue placing rounds until the path is full.

    • 4

Pour the sand and gravel mix in between the rounds until the walkway is flush with the ground.

    • 5

Sweep sand over the walkway with a push broom to fill in any cracks.
