Measure the length of the path that you want to lay. Use the hose to line out the edge of the path. Do the same thing for the other edge of the path. You want your path to be the width of the bricks without having to cut them.
Dig out the pathway with the spade. The blade on this type of shovel allows for a better feel for the depth you are digging. When you dig out the pathway you want to be 3 inches lower than the bricks. If the bricks are three inches thick then you want do dig down to six inches.
Pour limestone into the dug out path. Spread out the limestone. This bedding will make drainage easier and more efficient. Use the power leveller to pack the limestone. You can rent this device at any home or rental store.
Check the path for level. You will need to check in several areas.
Lay bricks in the path after it is level. Start laying the bricks on the end of the path. If you start in the middle it will not come out even. lay the first row and check for level. You need to check the level for every row. If the row is not level, tap on the bricks to level the pathway. Do not hit them hard. Light tapping will work much better than pounding them and splitting them.
Toss the sand on the path. Use the broom and brush the sand all around the area where the bricks are laid. This will take some time because you will want the sand to work its way into the grooves. This will help with the drainage and is something you may have to do a few times a year.
