How to Lay Landscaping Bricks

Landscaping bricks can spruce up a landscape design in a variety of ways. The long-lasting, versatile and durable material is often used as garden borders, walkways and patios. As a garden or lawn border, the bricks provide a clean way to hold mulch and prevent grass from invading a garden. By following the proper steps, the brick project will last for many outdoor seasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the location of the brick project and then dig a trench approximately 3 inches deeper than the depth of the brick. The trench should be 1 inch to 2 inches wider than the width of the brick project.

    • 2

Compact the soil with a tamping tool or the back of a spade. This will prevent the bricks from shifting.

    • 3

Spread a 2-inch to 3-inch layer of sand in the trench. The bricks should sit slightly above the ground level to compensate for settling.

    • 4

Firm the sand by tamping it with the tamping tool or the back of a spade.

    • 5

Place one brick at a time on the sand bed. Use a level to ensure the brick is as level as possible. Add or remove sand to get the proper level.

    • 6

Press sand or soil around each of the landscaping bricks.
