Do-It-Yourself Walkway Stones

Walkway stones offer a simple and elegant option for laying your own path without the labor of excavating the entire site. Placing walkway stones along a frequently traveled path makes it easier for guests to get around. Focusing foot traffic also reduces wear and tear on other parts of your lawn. Do-it-yourselfers don’t need fancy equipment or experience, and the project can be finished in a day.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two ropes or hoses parallel following your intended course. The ropes will help you stay on your chosen path.

    • 2

Place your walkway stones between the ropes, spaced about 6 inches apart or the distance of a casual stride.

    • 3

Dig a spade straight into the ground around the perimeter of the first stepping stone. Set the stone beside the path and dig out the dirt within the perimeter of the stones to a depth equal to the thickness of the stone plus 1 inch. Repeat this process for each walkway stone along the course.

    • 4

Pound a tamper tool over the soil where each stone will go. Compacting the ground helps prevent the stones from sinking.

    • 5

Lay 1 inch of course sand over the soil and tamp it down so it’s level and flat.

    • 6

Set the stones on top of the sand, shifting them until they don’t wobble. Apply pressure to each stone with the tamper tool to embed them in place.

    • 7

Walk the course from beginning to end to ensure the stones feel stable beneath your feet.
