Choose where you'll lay the walkway. Outline the area with landscaping paint.
Dig the outlined area with a shovel until it is 8 inches deep. Level the floor as you dig by removing high areas. Go back over the entire expanse with a tamper tool to compact the dirt.
Lay the 3/4-inch aggregate base over the expanse. Spread it evenly and tamp it down until it is 4 inches thick.
Set edge restraints over the aggregate against the edges of the site. Fasten them to the ground with 9-inch spikes.
Add 1 inch of coarse sand bedding over the aggregate. Spread it with a rake until the surface is smooth.
Set the sandstone in the sand bedding according to your pattern. Begin at one corner and work across. Butt the stones against each other and adjust them in place until they don't wobble. Hit them lightly with a mallet to embed them into the coarse sand.
Sweep masonry sand into the narrow crevices between the stones with a shop broom. After all of the sand is packed down, moisten the surface to pack it more securely. Continue to add sand until the narrow joints are filled.
Apply slip-resistant sealant to the surface with a roller paintbrush. The sealant will preserve the sandstone's color and make it easier to clean the surface.
