Easy Stepping Stone Crafts

Creative stepping stones are always a fun project for you and your children. Concrete is fairly inexpensive, but can be caustic, so make sure only adults mix it. Use circular molds and personal memorabilia like footprints, sea shells, or beads to create stepping stones that are both easy and meaningful.
  1. Growth Stepping Stones

    • One way to memorialize the growth of your baby is to imprint their hand or footprints into a concrete stepping stone every year. A circular mold, made using a pie tin, can be filled with concrete to make your stepping stones. As the concrete is drying, press your baby's hand or foot into the concrete. Immediately wash off any trace of concrete to prevent damage to your baby's sensitive skin. To keep track of the memories, engrave your baby's name and age into the concrete before it dries. If you repeat this every year, you will be able to watch your baby grow every time you use your walkway.

    Family Stones

    • A creative way to spend time as a family is to create concrete stepping stones together. Every person should be given their own concrete-filled mold to personalize. Have them write their names, either carving it out with their fingers or by pressing in objects like sea shells or beads. Each person should personalize each stone using non-perishable items that represent their personality. Small rubber figurines, flowers or sea shells all make interesting representations of your family's personality. Allow the concrete to dry, then create your walkway.

    Mosaic Stones

    • You can also create beautiful stepping stones with ease. Old, broken glass tiles or pieces of sea glass are unique and colorful ways to make a mosaic with your stepping stones. As the concrete is drying, place the tiles into your stepping stone either in a pattern or in a random order. Oddly shaped tiles and glass pieces add an additional bit of disorder to a carefully organized pattern. For a more aesthetically appealing look, use complementing colors in your mosaic.

    Painted Stones

    • Another way to easily make a beautiful stepping stone is to paint it. Once the concrete has hardened, use spray paint to cover the entire stone or create polka dots. For a more detailed stepping stone, use acrylic paint to produce your image. Once the paint has dried, use polyurethane spray or stain to protect your original image from damage from the sun or dirty shoes. After your stepping stone is totally dry, it is ready to be used for your walkway.
