Type of Rock Walkways

Rock walkways are one of the easiest ways to accessorize any garden or yard. You can create a number of visually appealing and highly functional walkways or paths using nothing more than rocks and stones. Though the installation methods vary greatly, the overall differences are purely visual when it comes to the types of rock walkways you can create.
  1. River Rock Walkways

    • River rocks are used to make a common type of walkway around flower beds and gardens because they provide excellent drainage for the greenery and aid in weed control when placed between rows of plants. The rocks are smooth and range in size (from the size of a golf ball to a fist).

    Pea Gravel Walkways

    • Pea gravel walkways are used where there is heavy rainfall or in areas of a yard where there is excessive moisture, such as in and around ponds and pools. Generally small in size (golf ball size and smaller), they range in color depending on the type of river the gravel was quarried from. Pea gravel provides a walkway that is uniform once it has been sufficiently pressed into the dirt or sand below.

    Flagstone Walkways

    • Flagstone walkways are one of the most common types used in gardens and yards around the world. Large, flat-topped rocks that naturally lend themselves to pathways and patio floors, flagstones come in a variety of shapes, colors, textures and sizes. They can be installed directly into the ground or cemented together when used on a patio.

    White Marble Walkways

    • White marble walkways are similar to flagstone walkways except that they are more commonly used as flowerbed or garden paths instead of walkways through yards and to and from patios. The color of the stone naturally accents plants, and though the size of the stone will vary greatly depending on the quarry you order from, the rich colors and natural warmth make white marble the obvious choice for a little extra flair.
