How to Lay Flagstone Outdoors

Laying flagstone can be tricky and even difficult for the inexperienced. Flagstone is a term used for describing any sedimentary rock that can be cut or split into layers. There are many types of flagstone, including limestone, sandstone, slate and bluestone. A thicker piece of flagstone will end up lasting longer than a thin piece, which could crack or break more easily than the thicker one. Flagstone is normally used for patios, walkways and flooring.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the garden hose to lay out the location and dimensions of the area were the flagstone will be installed.

    • 2

Dig 3 to 4 inches down in the designated area to give the flagstone room when placed on top of the pea stone. Cut any large roots with loppers.

    • 3

Cover the excavated area with filter fabric.

    • 4

Spread pea stone over the filter fabric and use the rake to make a smooth surface.

    • 5

Lay the flagstone on top of the pea gravel.

    • 6

Press the flagstone into the pea gravel and use a rubber mallet to tamp the flagstone without damaging it.

    • 7

Use sand to fill the spaces in between the different pieces of flagstone.
