How to Landscape Walkways

Walkways can be made out of a variety of materials ranging from casual gravel or brick to more expensive flagstone. Deciding whether you want a simple pathway or something more elaborate will help determine the type of landscaping. You'll want to dress up the landscape with plants and lights to complete the look.

Instructions

    • 1

Add color to your yard by adding perennials along the walkway. These plants come in a variety of sizes, heights and colors to complement your landscape. Low-maintenance perennials include lavender, which is reminiscent of French gardens, daylilies, geranium or catmint. Place plants the recommended distance apart to avoid crowding. Fill sparse areas with mulch, stones or decorative bark.

    • 2

Plant a variety of ornamental grasses with flowers or shrubs to fill in areas along the walkway. Choose a clump-forming ornamental grass, since it is less invasive than a rhizome grass and won't overtake your bed alongside the walkway. One type of clump-forming grass is blue fescue.

Line the walkway by planting boxwood on either side of the path. Prune the hedge to your desired shape.

    • 4

Plant a ground cover between stepping stones to give the walkway a complete look. Types of ground covers include Creeping Jenny, Elfin Creeping Thyme or Blue Star Creeper.

Place pathway lights on either side of the walkway to illuminate the path at night and enhance the landscape. Solar lights work well along a walkway because they don't require wires and can easily be set into any landscape.
