How to Make a Stone Looking Path Using Cement

You can use cement to make a path that looks like it was made from stone by using a mold. Molds create the look of a stone path out of quick-setting cement. Cement has a natural color already, but you can create an even more natural stone appearance by adding a pigment to the mix. You can lay the mold end to end to create a long path with a repeating pattern similar to one you would lay with actual stones.

Instructions

    • 1

Designate the overall outline for your path using landscaping spray paint. Shovel out the outline to a depth of 4 to 6 inches.

    • 2

Fill the dug-out path with gravel. Rake the gravel to create an even surface with a bow rake. This is the foundation for your path.

    • 3

Pack down the gravel with a tamper. Move the tamper up and down and strike the surface of the gravel evenly to tamp it down.

    • 4

Add quick-setting cement to a mixing trough. Mix in pigment using a trowel. Slowly add water and mix until you achieve a stiff batter-like consistency.

    • 5

Wet the mold with water and place it at the start of the path. Fill each cavity in the mold with cement using a trowel. Smooth off the top of each cavity. Allow the cement to set up for 5 to 10 minutes, then remove the mold.

    • 6

Place the mold at the edge of the first set of poured stones and repeat step five. Continue this process until you have completed the path.

    • 7

Mist the entire path lightly with water from a garden hose. Cover the path with plastic sheeting. Weight the sheeting down with bricks or other heavy objects. Leave in place for two to three days. Remove the sheeting and allow the path to cure for two to three weeks before heavy use.
