How to Repair a Tipped Sidewalk

Sidewalks sometimes tip due to the growth of tree roots or other shifts in the soil under the sidewalk. In large-scale cases professional services may be necessary. Contractors use high pressure equipment to force mud under the sidewalk to raise the slab to the proper position. This is known as "mud jacking." Homeowners can tackle small-scale jobs with tools and skills available to most do-it-yourselfers.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovels
  • 5-foot pry bar
  • Pre-mixed concrete
  • Scrap lumber
  • 4-foot carpenter's level

Instructions

    • 1

Excavate soil from below the low corners of the sidewalk slab. This creates a point to apply leverage to the slab during the repair process.

    • 2

Place the point of a five-foot or longer pry bar under the corner of the slab. Place scrap lumber under the bar about one foot from the slab and apply pressure to raise the slab. Excavate additional dirt, if necessary, from the low sides of the sidewalk if it will not break free under the pressure from the lever.

    • 3

Place blocks of scrap lumber under the sidewalk to hold it level. Use thin pieces of lumber, such as plywood, with the thicker blocks for fine adjustments. Check the level of the slab with a four-foot carpenter's level.

    • 4

Excavate dirt from the low slides to create an opening from the side of the slab to open area under the sidewalk.

    • 5

Mix a premixed concrete, a bagged product containing aggregate and cement, with water according to manufacturer's instructions. Pour some of the cement on the ground next to the excavation and push it under the sidewalk with an appropriately sized scrap of lumber. Continue to add concrete and force it under the slab until the entire void is full of concrete.

    • 6

Remove the blocks and check the level of the sidewalk with the carpenter's level. Press down on high points until the slab is level while resting on the wet concrete. Allow the cement to dry for at least 24 hours.

    • 7

Fill in any of the excavations around the sidewalk with dirt, seed or grass.
