DIY Exposed Aggregate Concrete

Exposed aggregate concrete offers an attractive finish displaying the gravel or crushed rock of the cement. This exposed surface is not only more visually interesting than the smooth gray cement surface but it also provides better traction in wet or icy conditions. The process of exposing the aggregate requires some basic tools and proper timing for success.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the concrete slab following normal processes. This includes screeding, or leveling off the concrete at the top of the form with a 2-by-4-inch straight board. This is followed by using a trowel to smooth the surface to a uniform finish.

Monitor the curing of the cement in the hours after the concrete pour is finished. Test the cement with a stiff brush. When you can brush away the cement surface without disturbing the aggregate below it the pour is ready for the next step.

Brush away the cement surface with a long-handled stiff brush. Work from the center to the outside of the slab, brushing the cement off the surface of the slab. Work quickly as the slab will not stay at the proper stage of curing long. However, lower temperatures slow the curing.
