Dig out the area to a depth of between 7 and 12 inches, depending on how soft the soil is. If it is very soft, dig the larger amount since the soil may settle, and you will need more base material. Level using a regular or laser level. Tie string to stakes along the side of the walkway to indicate the finished height. Lay landscaping cloth over the dug-out area to help prevent weeds and grass from growing up between the pavers.
Lay down 4 inches of gravel, again checking the level and tamping down to create a firm surface. The gravel will create a solid base for the walkway and allow for water drainage. Lay down 2 inches of sand, checking the level and tamping down to create a firm surface. If the walkway is next to a house or garden shed, you may want to slope it slightly away from the structure to allow for proper water drainage. If it is in the center of a yard, slope it slightly down to each side.
Lay the edging stones or wood along the edges of the walkway to support the pavers as you lay them down. Lay the pavers down. As you lay the pavers, continue checking that they are level, pushing them down into the sand if they are too high or piling sand under stones that are too low.
Pour sand over the pavers and sweep in between the stones. Moisten lightly with a hose and let dry. You may have to repeat this several times until the sand is level with the pavers. This will help prevent weeds and grass from growing up between the stones.
