DIY: Landscape Edge Pavers

The uniform appearance of paver edging gives gardens, walkways and patios a defined, polished look. Installing landscape edging is a simple project you can do yourself in a day. Once complete, paver edging reduces maintenance by blocking weeds and grass and retains soil in the garden. Careful preparation and a proper base to support the pavers will also improve the site's drainage and ensure the pavers stay in place for many years.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the pavers with a tape measure and decide if you want to lay them end-to-end or side-to-side. Placing the pavers side-to-side creates thicker edging and requires more pavers. Placing them end-to-end results in a narrow border.

    • 2

Outline the garden or walkway you are edging with ropes. The space between the ropes and the edge of the garden or walkway should equal the length or width of the paver, depending on how you choose to lay them, plus 4 inches.

    • 3

Unearth grass and dirt from between the rope and garden or patio with a shovel until you have a trench. The hole should be 5 inches deep with vertical sides and a level bottom.

    • 4

Fit strips of agricultural fabric along the inside and interior walls of the trench to block weed growth.

    • 5

Cover the fabric with 3/4-inch gravel and spread it evenly with the shovel. Continue adding gravel and packing it down with the back of the shovel until it is 3 inches thick.

    • 6

Pour an inch of coarse sand over the gravel to make the base level.

    • 7

Set the pavers on the sand side-to-side or end-to-end so the sides are flush against each other. Lay a bubble level over adjacent pieces as you work and adjust them in the sand until they are level. Continue setting pavers until the trench is filled.

    • 8

Backfill the space between the pavers and garden or walkway with pea gravel. Pea gravel provides an additional weed barrier, and facilitates drainage.

    • 9

Sprinkle stone dust over the paver edging and push it between the pavers with a stiff hand brush. Stone dust cushions and stabilizes the edging.
