How to Build Rock Walkways

A rock walkway is used in backyards, gardens and front or side entrances to provide a natural looking path. There are a variety of options, such as flat stones, natural large rocks, gravel and paving stones. Choose rocks with at least one flat side to provide an even surface to walk on. A stone pathway requires a compacted base of fine crushable gravel to assure it is there for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the outline of the path with spray paint. It doesn't need to be two straight lines, so be creative with the design.

    • 2

Dig down and remove 6 inches of the topsoil with a shovel along the entire path.

    • 3

Lay 4 inches of fine crushable stone along the path and compact flat with the tamper. The more tampering you do the more stable the ground under the path will be.

    • 4

Lay the stones along the path in the desired shape. If you need to remove a little of the base to get the stones to lay flat, do so with the shovel or your hand.

    • 5

Pour pea stone gravel between the rocks and level them with a rake.
