How to Lay a Stone Path

Stone paths create a natural walkway through your outdoor space. They blend in with the natural setting and complement many different styles of homes. Laying a stone path is also an effective way to prevent erosion on your property from foot traffic. The path will create a distinct place to walk through the yard and provide a wear-resistant surface to walk on. If you are just beginning to landscape your yard, you can plan your landscape features around the stone path.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the stones along the desired pathway in your yard. Experiment with the layout until you achieve an aesthetically pleasing configuration. Space the stones close enough together so that the average person can step easily from one stone to the next.

    • 2

Cut the sod around each stone using the point of a garden trowel. Set each stone aside and dig out each outline 1/2 inch to 1 inch deeper than the thickness of the respective stone using the trowel.

    • 3

Fill the dug out spaces with 1/2 inch to 1 inch of sand. Smooth the sand out with your hands. Lay the stones in their respective dug out spaces over the sand.

Lay a level across each stone. Tap the surface of the stone with a rubber mallet to seat the stone firmly in the ground and level it.
