How to Edge a Stone Walk

Stone walkways can provide a nicely polished look to a landscape as well as providing a safe area to walk to and from the house, driveway or in between gardens. One issue with stone walkways is that the surrounding grass may spread and begin to cover the stone. To keep your walkways clean and free from intrusion, it is necessary to install an edging or border along the walkway. You can use stone, brick or even black plastic edging.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark off the area where you will be installing your edging. You can use spray paint on grass, because it will wash off when you water the yard or when it rains. Make a uniform line along both sides of the stone walk.

    • 2

Dig out a trench for your edging. For brick edging, dig down at least two-thirds of the thickness of the bricks you will be using. For plastic edging, you will need to dig down 2 to 3 inches, depending on the height of the edging. At least 1 inch of the top of the edging should be exposed.

    • 3

Fill in the trench with sand for brick edging. If you will be using bricks, they will need a sturdy base. Fill in the trench halfway with fine sand. You will use the rest of the sand once the bricks are in place. For plastic edging, you will not need to insert sand into your trench.

    • 4

Place the edging alongside the walkway. Start at one end and work slowly, making sure that your lines are even. If your'e using bricks, pack them into the sand. If using plastic edging, tamp down the soil as you work to hold the edging in place. Once you have finished one side of the walkway, move to the next side.

Pour the remainder of the sand over the bricks. This will help hold the bricks in place. Do not cover the bricks; simply fill in the area around them.

    • 6

Water the sand. This will help tamp the sand down and create a sturdy base for your brick edging. If you used plastic edging, you will not need to water the ground.
