How to Lay Deco Granite

Deco granite, short for decomposed granite, is a type of paving material commonly used for pathways or driveways that feature a more casual look. This inexpensive medium, which provides a natural look to various surfaces, is composed of small granules of granite. The particles generally range from 1/4 inch in size to a sandy consistency. Unlike other paving materials, decomposed granite is relatively simple to apply and lay in many areas.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the area where you would like to lay decomposed granite with landscape paint or stakes. Drive the stakes into the ground along the area. Connect the stakes with strings.

    • 2

Remove any organic matter such as grass in the designated area. Use a shovel to clear all plants and other matter.

    • 3

Dig approximately 4 inches into the soil with a shovel. Be sure to clear and dig along the entire designated area. Use a rake or hoe to even out the surface in the cleared area.

    • 4

Place landscape fabric over the entire designated area. Position bricks in certain areas to keep the fabric on the ground and avoid having it blown away by wind.

    • 5

Lay approximately 2 inches of decomposed granite over the entire area. Compact the area with a compactor. Run the compactor over the area for a smooth surface.

    • 6

Apply the remainder of the decomposed granite to fill the entire area. Repeat the compacting procedure to obtain a smooth decomposed granite area.
