How to Wash Pea Stones

Pea stones or pea gravel are small rocks used in landscaping and in pet care. They are often used in fish tanks and in puppy kennels to collect waste matter. Starting your project with clean pea stones, regardless of what you're using it for, results in a better-looking end result. Cleaning pea stones is a simple do-it-yourself project. When working with large amounts of pea stones, work in smaller, more manageable batches.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a wheelbarrow about 1/3 full of pea stones.

    • 2

Run a garden hose to the wheelbarrow and turn on the water, filling and cascading out of the wheelbarrow.

    • 3

Turn the pea stones with a shovel or by raking it with a metal rake to expose all of the pea stones to the clean water and to loosen any dirt attached to the pea stones. Continue turning the stones until the water runs clear.

    • 4

Place the pea stones in the area you'll be using them like flower beds or dog kennels.

    • 5

Pick up any debris in the pea stones daily. Dispose of garbage or animal waste in a trash receptacle.

    • 6

Hose down the pea stones after you've removed the debris and let them dry naturally.
