Landscaping With Round Brick

While bricks tend to bring a more traditional look to a yard, round brick patterns add a unique touch. Whether you wish to lay a pavement, borders or another element, circles balance the rectangular angles of the home and yard. Installing round brick structures and designs requires detailed planning and careful installation.
  1. Patio

    • A round brick patio creates a focal point in a yard. Once the site is excavated, find the center by snapping two chalk lines along the vertical and horizontal axis. Lay a square paver over the spot where the lines intersect. Create your center circle with eight triangular bricks laid with the tip facing the center. Use full size bricks for the rest of the surface, positioning them so the inner corners touch adjacent bricks leaving a slight gap between the outer corners. Fill the gaps with fine sand once they are all laid to keep them in position.

    Borders

    • Curved brick borders accentuate the shape of gardens and flower beds. Lay the bricks end-to-end for narrow, tighter curves, or side-by-side for a wavy border. Brick borders should be laid over a base of gravel and sand to block weeds and make it easier for water to escape. Instead of stakes and string, use a rope or hose to outline the round edges.

    Raised Garden

    • Building a raised garden elevates plants and adds depth to a yard. Raised gardens are typically designed as four retaining walls framing a garden. Laying the bricks to form a circle instead of a square entails using half bricks for the first three rows. Mark the outline with landscaping paint and take care to follow the curve precisely when cutting out the trench with a spade. Use full size bricks for the last few rows until you reach the desired height. Once the mortar sets, line the bottom with landscaping fabric and fill in interior with topsoil.

    Walkway

    • Brick walkways often feature classic patterns like basket-weave or herringbone. Whether the walkway course is curved or straight, laying the bricks in a circular pattern puts a unique spin on the surface. Practice laying the bricks in intersecting arches by dry-laying them on the grass before digging out the foundation. If you have a special garden, pool or other area you want to highlight, consider laying a brick walkway in a circle around the feature. Set the bricks end-to-end in concentric circles so the focal point is the center.
