How to Install Precast Steps

Concrete steps are often at the front, side or back entryway of a residential structure. Forms are often constructed to facilitate the on-site pouring of concrete to form steps. An alternative to pouring steps on-site is to use precast concrete steps made in a controlled environment for optimal results. Basic preparation of the site is all that is involved prior to installing precast steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the base of the precast concrete steps with a tape measure. Layout the dimensions for the concrete precast steps on the ground in the desired location. Add 1 foot to the overall dimensions of the base. Mark the corners with stakes.

    • 2

Tie a string to one stake. Pull the string around all of the stakes and back to the beginning stake. Tie the string in place. Spray the ground along the string with white marking paint. Remove the string and stakes.

    • 3

Remove the top 4 inches of soil from inside the spray-marked area. Use a shovel to remove the grass and topsoil from the area.

    • 4

Add 4 inches of gravel to the area where the soil was removed. Even the gravel with a rake. Compact the gravel with a tamp.

    • 5

Add more gravel as needed and continue to tamp it down until the gravel is firmly in place and level with the surrounding ground.

    • 6

Transport the precast concrete steps to the compacted gravel with a step dolly. Position the step on the gravel initially so that there is 1 foot of gravel around the edges.

    • 7

Adjust the precast steps to one side or the other of the doorway. Position the steps so that there will be extra room when someone steps out of the door way based on how the door swings open. Position the steps securely back against the structure.
