Mark out the area in which you want to install the walkway with marking paint or nylon cord tied to wooden stakes. The walkway should be wide enough to accommodate the width of your pea gravel walkway, plus the width of your chosen brick. This will vary by project, depending on your material choices.
Dig out the trench to a depth of 6 inches. When you have removed all topsoil, compact the exposed soil with a hand tamper to create a flat, level surface.
Line the bottom of the trench with 2 inches of leveling sand, spread evenly throughout the entire trench with a steel rake. Flatten the surface completely with the flat side of the rake. This provides a base for your walkway that will provide soft support and allow excess rainwater to drain.
Set the bricks along both edges of the trench directly on top of the sand. Gently tap the bricks into place with a rubber mallet to ensure that they are fully implanted. Run a level along the bricks as you install to ensure that they sit flat; tap higher bricks down more as necessary.
Lay all bricks level along the edges. If necessary, cut bricks to fit with a brick cutter or chisel and hammer. Once all bricks are in place along the edge of the trench, you can fill in the walkway with your pea gravel.
