The Geotextile Fabric Installation

Geotextile fabric is also referred to as agricultural fabric, geosynthetic or geotextile cloth. This material is placed between the soil and gravel or other earthen materials to "enhance water movement and retard soil movement, and as a blanket to add reinforcement and separation," according to the Society for Engineering in Agricultural, Food, and Biological Systems. For best results, geotextile fabric should be installed on dry soil.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the rake and shovel to clear the area of any stumps, rocks, sharp objects or debris.

    • 2

Grade the are where you will be laying the geotextile fabric. This will allow for surface drainage.

    • 3

Unroll the geotextile fabric over the area. Lay stones on the corners and a few along the side to weight it down so it won't blow away. You'll remove these once the gravel or other earthen material is spread over the fabric.

    • 4

Overlap the edges of the fabric by two feet to cover a large area. This will ensure there is no gap in the geotextile material once the gravel or other earthen material is spread over the fabric.

    • 5

Dump the gravel or earthen material onto the fabric.

    • 6

Spread and smooth the gravel or earthen material with the earthmoving equipment. Be sure to spread the gravel in the same directions as the geotextile fabric overlap to avoid the two pieces spreading apart.

    • 7

Compact the gravel or earthen material with the earthmoving equipment.
