Dig out the area where the driveway will be located to a depth of 4 inches. Dispose of the dirt with a wheelbarrow.
Line the bottom of the excavated area with landscape cloth. Roll out the cloth and cut it to fit the width of the driveway, then overlap the first length by two inches with the next strip.
Lay 3 inches of medium gravel on the bottom of the excavation. Rake the gravel so it's smooth. Plan on .3 cubic feet of grave for each square foot of surface area.
Top off the medium gravel with fine-grade gravel. Rake it smooth to match the surface of the surrounding area. Plan on .1 cubic foot of gravel for each square foot of surface area that needs covered.
