How to Install Cobblestone Curbing

Cobblestone is an attractive landscaping material and is often used to pave sidewalks, driveways and patios, but it is also used as an edging material to create borders and curbs. It is ideal for creating a rugged border while maintaining a natural appearance in your outdoor space. Prepare a base for the cobblestone curbing so that it will be durable throughout the year as the ground shifts. Install cobblestone curbing along the edges of sidewalks, gardens, paths and patios.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray landscaping spray paint on the ground along the outside edges of where you would like to install the cobblestone curb. Make the outside edges 3 to 6 inches wider than the width of the cobblestone so that you can finish the edges with a layer of gravel.

    • 2

Dig the space out between the painted lines to a depth of 6 to 8 inches with a shovel. Fill in the dug out space with a 2-inch layer of gravel.

    • 3

Strike the gravel evenly in an up and down motion with a hand tamper to compact it. This is the foundation for the curbing.

    • 4

Start at one end of the foundation and lay the cobblestone end to end along the entire gravel foundation. Center the cobblestone within the width of the foundation so that you can trim the side edges with gravel. Place a level across the top of each cobblestone as you lay it in place. Adjust the cobblestones for level by tapping them with a rubber mallet.

    • 5

Fill in along the side edges of the cobblestone curbing with gravel to create a finished edge along both sides. The gravel should be filled to ground level.
