How to Make a Pea Gravel and Brick Path

There are many aspects to paths. Their destinations are only one facet of building paths. The composition of a path may make a statement and create a mood. Cement paths encourage swift, businesslike passage while gravel or wood chip pathways invite lingering. Creating a gravel path lined by bricks draws the eye through the landscaping. An additional feature of pea gravel pathways is the distinctive sound they make when you walk on them.

Instructions

    • 1

Use two hoses to outline the pathway. Make adjustments to the hoses until you are happy with the appearance of the future path.

    • 2

Remove the sod where the path is going using the sod-removing tool. First cut down along the edge of the path, then slip the tool under the sod, removing it in chunks.

    • 3

Dig out the whole area of the path down to 3 inches deep. Smooth the bottom of the path until it is reasonably level. It doesn't need to be perfect, as the sand covers imperfections.

    • 4

Pour sand in the pathway to 1 inch in depth. Level the sand using a 2-by-4-inch board cut shorter than the width of the path.

    • 5

Place bricks end-to-end parallel to the direction of the path along both of its sides. Wiggle each brick slightly to set it into the sand. Keep the top of each brick at the same height as the one before it. If necessary, sweep more sand under the brick to raise its level.

Pour gravel between the bricks and level it with the board. Spray the pathway down with water to help set it into place.
