How to Make a Concrete Walkway That Looks Like Bricks

Both brick and concrete are hard, durable building materials. Brick can cost more and take more preparation to lay out into a walkway. Instead, use concrete and brick stamps to create a concrete walkway that looks like one made from bricks. Concrete stamps and dye transform a plain concrete walkway into an elegant brick path with Old World charm. Give the impression that you laid brick pavers down by using a simple, repeating concrete stamp pattern.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your site for installation of a concrete walkway. Clear away grass and dirt. Create an even level surface with clearly marked borders. Line your walkway with wood shims to form the concrete pathway.

    • 2

Mix concrete and add red, brown and black concrete dyes to create a red brick color. Consult with a paint specialist at your local hardware or home improvement store to find the right dye combination for your concrete. Explain that you want to use a brick stamp to make the poured concrete look like brick. Mix dye thoroughly into concrete.

    • 3

Select a brick stamp with a pattern that you like. Choose from traditional brick paver patterns with straight lines or larger, more imaginative shapes. Create a temporary platform out of a 2-inch thick wood beam that is eight inches longer than the width of your pathway. Place two bricks on either side of the pathway and set the beam on top of them to raise it above your walkway. Stand or squat on the beam while pressing the stamp into the concrete to avoid touching the wet concrete.

    • 4

Pour concrete into the pathway in 10-foot sections. Allow the concrete to dry partially.

    • 5

Stamp one 10-foot section at a time. Spray the brick stamp with liquid release agent or press it into a large tray filled with powder release agent. Press the stamp into the top left corner of the still-malleable concrete. Carefully lift it out of the concrete and wipe it off with a clean cloth rag. Press the stamp back into the concrete beside the first imprint. Continue this process until the entire 10-foot section is stamped.

    • 6

Pour the next 10-foot section and repeat the process of stamping the concrete until the entire walkway is complete. Allow the walkway to dry for at least 48 hours before walking or riding on it.
