How to Build a Walkway to a Boat

If you are fortunate enough to have a waterfront property, chances are you are also the owner of a fishing boat or other watercraft. Build a basic pathway out of pavers to make it easier to access your boat and docking area. You can build this type of pathway yourself in a reasonable amount of time, assuming you have a bit of construction experience. Because pavers must be laid on a level surface, you should only use this type of path only if the ground leading up to your boat is relatively flat.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Spray paint
  • Shovel
  • Crushed gravel
  • Tamper
  • Sand
  • Brick pavers
  • Diamond saw
  • Broom
  • Plate compactor

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all brush, growth and rocks from the area where you want to build your path, then measure out and mark where the walkway will go. Draw out the boundaries for the path using a can of spray paint to give you a visual of where the path will sit.

    • 2

Dig out the path using a shovel. Dig down 8 inches to accommodate for the size of your pavers and for the layer of compact material that you will place under the bricks to keep them from sinking into the ground.

    • 3

Lay down four inches of crushed gravel into the path. Compact the gravel so it is level using a tamper. Add a second two-inch layer of sand on top of the gravel and compact it flat using your tamper.

    • 4

Lay the bricks on top of the sand gently but do not push them in. Continue laying the bricks in an alternating pattern so your path doesn't look too uniform.

    • 5

Cut any bricks as required using a diamond blade saw. If you reach any areas in your path where you need a smaller brick or a curved brick, you will have to cut one to size using your saw.

    • 6

Sweep sand into the crevices between the blocks to act as mortar and then use a plate compactor to level the bricks into place.
