Interlocking Concrete Edging Pavers

The original concrete pavers were 2-in. thick solid concrete blocks, made as caps for concrete block walls and other construction. People began setting them flat as paving for patios and walks. Then gardeners set them on edge, to make borders for flower beds and gardens. Concrete companies then began making blocks with interlocking edges, for more secure fastening. Today interlocking blocks are used for paving, walls or edging.
  1. Special Edging Restraints

    • Interlocking pavers vary in size and style. Some are made specifically as edging restraints, typically about 4 in. high and wide, with ends that interlock to make them into a stable edge. You can set them in straight lines or curved slightly. These usually are used along sidewalks to separate foundation plantings or low beds from the walks.

    Edging Walls

    • Some interlocking paver blocks are used for walls as well as garden or boundary edges. These blocks are usually larger, up to 6 or 8 in. thick and in octagon, hexagon or other shapes. Depending on how the edges interlock, these can be laid flat, like a wall, or upright, to make a taller edging barrier. Two layers of interlocked blocks laid flat makes a sturdy edge for a flower, vegetable garden or foundation planting.

    Durability

    • The main advantage to concrete pavers for edging is durability. Concrete won't decay, like wood, and requires no maintenance unless a block is somehow broken. Concrete edging pavers come in many colors and a variety of styles, with straight or curved edges, half-circle patterns or other decorative features. Concrete edging pavers are easy to install and require no special tools or materials, although they may be set in concrete for more rigidity.

    Edges for Paving

    • Concrete edging pavers will hold back soil or mulch and block intrusion of grass from a lawn. They make a firm, attractive barrier used as edging around patios, walkways or paths, which are paved either with flat concrete pavers or with bricks, stones or other materials. They make an excellent border for paths of gravel, wood chips or other decorative materials.
