How to Build a Crushed Granite Pathway

Crushed granite, or granite in the form of gravel, is a durable material that's easier to work with than solid granite slabs, and offers a polished look to your yard or landscape. A crushed granite walkway can give your visitors an attractive path to a water feature or some other focal point in your yard. Building a crushed granite pathway yourself will save you the cost of hiring a professional service to perform the work for you, and a few simple tools, like a shovel and a wheelbarrow, will help you complete your task.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the path, or route, you wish the pathway to take. Lay down two parallel ropes to mark both sides of the path. Use a measuring tape to space the two lines of rope 4 feet apart; this will form your main path. Use spray paint to mark the ropes position, and then remove the ropes.

    • 2

Use a shovel to excavate the soil between the marked lines. Dig down to a depth of 7 inches. Dump the removed soil into a wheelbarrow for easy removal.

    • 3

Tamp down the ground with a tamper to even it out. Use a level to ensure the ground is even.

    • 4

Position a weed screen across the bottom of the excavated area. Secure the weed screen into place with spikes.

    • 5

Pour 3/4-inch aggregate over the weed screen to a depth of approximately 4 inches. Use the tamper to compact the aggregate.

    • 6

Pour the crushed granite over the surface of the aggregate until the granite reaches a depth of 3 inches. Use a rake to spread out and level the granite. Again use the tamper to compact the granite. Check the granite with a level to ensure it is even.
