How to Measure the Temperature of Concrete

When pouring concrete, it is important to monitor the conditions to ensure that your concrete cures properly and will last as long as possible. If the air temperature is too hot or cold, the concrete will cure too quickly or too slowly, robbing the finished product of its strength. Therefore, it is important to monitor the concrete temperature from pouring to curing to make sure the temperature remains between 40 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit for best results.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the infrared thermometer at the appropriate distance from the concrete. For every inch of distance from the thermometer to the concrete, the thermometer will cover a 6-inch circle.

    • 2

Aim an infrared thermometer at the center of the area of concrete of which you need a temperature reading. This type of thermometer measures the temperature of an area rather than a specific point, so it is important to aim near the middle.

    • 3

Press the trigger button on the thermometer to get your reading. Many infrared thermometers give a reading within a second or two.

    • 4

Monitor the temperature of the concrete throughout the curing process, which can take a couple of days depending on the size of your project.
