How to Cut Pavement for Driveway Lights

Outdoor lighting provides illumination at night and enhances the overall appearance of a home by accenting it. The process of installing exterior lights involves running electrical wires from the lights to a central power source. Unfortunately, if you have a driveway, the wire must run across it. To protect and disguise the wire requires that you cut a groove in the driveway, allowing you to push the wiring down into it.

Things You'll Need

  • Chalk line
  • Safety glasses
  • Circular saw
  • Concrete or masonry cutting blade
  • Outdoor extension cord (optional)
  • Broom
  • Concrete caulk
  • Caulking gun

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the area of the driveway closest to the wire and stretch a chalk line tool across it from one side to the other. Lift and release the line to create a mark on top of the driveway, then wind up the chalk line and set it aside.

    • 2

Put on safety glasses and insert a masonry or concrete blade into a circular saw, following the manufacturer's instructions. Plug the cord of the saw into an electrical outlet. Use an outdoor-approved extension cord for added length if necessary.

    • 3

Hold the saw just above one side of the driveway and squeeze the trigger to begin spinning the blade. Lower the blade onto the chalk line and hold it in place until you've cut 1/2 inch deep.

    • 4

Continue for one to two minutes, and then rest for one minute to prevent the saw from overheating. Push the saw forward again very slowly, cutting through the chalk line to a 1/2-inch depth until you reach the other side of the driveway.

    • 5

Sweep the cut line, using a broom to remove all sanding dust from the cut line and to make room for the wiring.

    • 6

Press the wire into the groove and insert a tube of concrete caulk into a caulking gun. Apply a bead of caulk over the top of the wire until it fills in the top of the groove to the same level as the surrounding driveway.
