How to Make Asphalt Paint

Asphalt paint can be used for a variety of purposes such as sealing asphalt roofs, painting lines on streets and parking lots, and sealing outdoor asphalt patios and walkways. Because asphalt receives so much wear and tear, regular outdoor paint must be modified to be durable enough to form a good weather seal. The addition of gilsonite, which is also known as natural bitumen, adds the weather resistance necessary for a durable asphalt paint.

Things You'll Need

  • Tarp or drop cloth
  • Gilsonite
  • Oil-based exterior floor paint
  • 5-gallon bucket with lid
  • Paint stick
  • Mineral spirits
  • Oil-based glaze or paint

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your working area by laying out a tarp or drop cloth and placing the 5-gallon bucket in the middle. Shake the container of oil-based exterior floor paint and pour its contents into the 5-gallon bucket. Stir the floor paint in the bucket to ensure that the oil and pigments are thoroughly combined.

    • 2

Pour about 1 cup of liquid gilsonite into the paint and stir it with your paint stick. The gilsonite may affect the color of the paint, but it will add gloss, roughness and weather resistance properties to the paint that will make it very durable. After you have stirred the gilsonite into the paint, add more if the color of the paint hasn't changed too much. You don't have to worry about adding too much gilsonite because it acts as a binder. The more you add, the more weatherproof your paint will be.

    • 3

Stir the paint and gilsonite mixture until you don't see any differences in pigment anywhere in the bucket. If the stirring takes too long, you can put the lid on the bucket and take it to your nearest home improvement store and ask them to put it in their paint-shaking machine for a few minutes.

Check the consistency of the paint by dipping your paint stick in the paint and pulling it out. Allow it to drip back into the bucket. If the paint is gloppy or too thick to easily paint with, add mineral spirits to the mixture and stir them in until your paint reaches a more reasonable consistency.

Adjust the color of your asphalt paint by adding small amounts of oil-based glaze or paints. These last-minute color adjustments can fix any problems that were created by adding the gilsonite and mineral spirits. Since glazes and paints don't change the consistency much, you can alter the colors without having to go back and make adjustments to the amount of gilsonite.
