Outline the walkway with non-toxic spray paint. Use a spade to skim off all the plant material. Remove dirt in the area to create a level surface approximately 3 inches below the soil grade. Make the edges form right angles with the bottom of the path.
Measure the length and width of the walkway. Multiply the two numbers to find the square footage of the area. Multiply that number times .25 to determine the needed cubic footage of gravel. Divide by 27 to find out how many cubic yards of gravel to purchase.
Add the lengths together. Multiply the total length in feet by 12 to find the inches. Divide the result by 8 inches to determine the approximate number of bricks needed to border the walkway.
Order a delivery or pick up the amount of gravel and brick you need. Choose a brick color that matches your home's exterior or contrasts with it. Use landscaping bricks specifically designed for patios and walkways.
Unroll and place landscape fabric into the path. Use landscaping staples to hold it in place.
Spread a 1-inch layer of gravel over the entire walkway. Layer approximately 1/2 inch of sand in strips as wide as the bricks along the length of each side of the path. Level the sand using a board with a level attached.
Place the brick border in the path along each side. Start at one end and set a brick in. Tap it in place with a mallet. Add the next brick and tap it toward the outer edge and the previous brick. Continue until you border both sides with the bricks.
