How to Landscape Cabin Entries

Cabins are often located in natural settings with an emphasis on fitting into the landscape. Traditionally they present a warm and inviting face to the visitor; their landscape elements should therefore be low-maintenance, unassuming and compatible with the setting. A walkway allows the visitor to make the psychological transition to the relaxing environment of the cabin. Provide an opportunity to showcase regional plants and a spot to observe the natural world. Save the showy flowers for the cabin entry and allow space to enjoy the local flora and fauna.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a garden gate at the point of entry from the street or driveway. Build a boardwalk -- a walkway constructed with wood planks -- at least 4 feet wide, to the door. Add a porch at the door.

    • 2

Plant shrubs and perennials strategically at transition points adjacent to the walkway. Choose local or hardy plants and grasses arranged in different heights. Selectively place plants with special characteristics such as color and scent as highlights in the beds.

    • 3

Add a few berry bushes to the shrub beds to attract birds. Place a bird feeder and a bird bath or container with water nearby.

    • 4

Frame the doorway with beds planted with the selected shrubs and perennials on each side of the walkway. Place a pair of Adirondack chairs on the porch.

    • 5

Hang baskets of colorful annuals, including trailing and scented flowers, around the porch. Add containers of annuals for any steps. Plant abundantly for an exuberant effect near the door.
