Arches are vertical landscape structures that create a ceiling for a site, helping to focus attention on special features or spaces in the landscape. A function of the arch is to create mystery by framing the view beyond, enticing people to go farther. They also serve as gateways or transition elements to different spaces such as patios or woodlands. The decision to add an arch to the site should evolve organically from the landscape plan so that it reinforces the design theme for the site.

1
Choose material for the arch that's compatible with the house and garden. Select a point of transition or a special view or feature along the walkway.
-
2
Place the arch so that it draws attention from a distance. Widen the walkway to accommodate the arch. Make sure the arch frames an appealing view and screens unpleasant ones from both sides.

Plant shrubs abundantly on either side of the walkway on both sides of the arch without crowding. Add flowering plants for emphasis. Cover the arch with climbing plants and ramblers but leave some of the structure exposed.
