How to Build a Curved Walkway

Building a walkway in your yard provides you with a way to traverse the yard without stepping on grass that is wet and muddy. Depending on where you decide to build your walkway, the walkway may have to contain curves in the layout. If this is the case, building a walkway out of stone like pebbles or crushed gravel can provide an attractive walkway that can be built fairly quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the layout of the walkway on the ground. You can do this by laying down a garden hose, spray painting the ground or driving wooden stakes into the ground along the path of the walkway.

    • 2

Excavate the ground inside the borders of the walkway to a depth of 4 inches.

    • 3

Rake the soil at the bottom of the trench level, then tamp it down to make it firm.

    • 4

Add gravel into the trench until there is a layer 2 1/2 inches deep. Smooth the gravel with a rake and compact it with the tamp.

    • 5

Cover the gravel inside the trench with landscaping fabric to prevent weeds from growing.

    • 6

Build a simple spacing tool out of a 2-by-4 to use as a guide when installing the edging. Cut two notches into the board that are as wide as the walkway.

    • 7

Place metal edging into the trench along one wall. Read the instructions provided by the manufacturer for the installation procedure.

    • 8

Lay the 2-by-4 spacing tool across the trench at one end. Slide one of the notches onto the edging.

    • 9

Set the edging into the trench on the opposite side, using the second notch in the spacing tool as a guide when positioning the edging. Move the spacer along the trench every few feet as you set the edging.

    • 10

Backfill any space between the outer side of the edging and the surrounding ground.

    • 11

Add more crushed gravel or pebbles into the trench until it's about 1/2 inch beneath the top of the edging. Rake the stone smooth and place stepping stones on top of the crushed stones, spacing them at a comfortable walking distance.
