Instructions

Edge the sidewalk to create a crisp rim. Use a mechanical or manual edger, running the tool along the border of the sidewalk where it meets the grass to create this clean look. Pull away and discard any clumps of grass your edger removes.

Create a border with bricks or other decorative stones. Cut away a few inches of grass and dirt on both sides of your sidewalk and lay bricks or stones to create a decorative edge that will set your sidewalk apart from the rest. To ensure that this edge stays attractive and level, remove a consistent amount of dirt and grass and pour sand over your stones once you lay them, pushing this sand into the spaces between them to hold them into place.

Plant flowers or shrubbery around the sidewalk. Create a living border by crafting small flower beds surrounding your sidewalk. Avoid planting flowers or shrubbery that will extend onto the sidewalk itself, as it will almost certainly get trampled if it does. Instead, opt for tall flowers that will not rest on the sidewalk, such as tulips.

Stain the sidewalk. Purchase a concrete stain in a hue that appeals to you and follow package instructions to stain the concrete a different hue. Generally, you apply this stain with a roller, pressing it into the grooves of the sidewalk. This is a particularly wise choice if your sidewalk has become stained or discolored.

Create temporary decorations with chalk. If decorating your sidewalk as a way to add a touch of festiveness to an outdoor party, use chalk and sketch designs that fit with the party theme. When it rains, these additions will be washed away, but it will temporarily enhance your space.
