How to Lay Patio Pavers on a Sloped Hill

Patio pavers can be installed in numerous different ways, ranging from pavers that are part of an overall patio, as singular stepping stones or as walkways and sidewalks. The installation methods are straightforward and similar throughout all types of patio paver installations, which means as far as laying patio pavers on a slope is concerned you can use the same tools and processes. However, you must remember the effects of gravity and keep that in mind if you have a significant slope to work with.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your brick patio area with the tape measure and outline the dimensions with a hose. Dig down within the area for your installation with a shovel, allowing around 4 inches for the gravel base, 2 inches for the sand base and the thickness of the patio pavers.

Line the base of the installation area with a layer of gravel at least four inches thick, and add a couple inches of sand on top of that. Run the compacting machine over the entire area to compact the sand and gravel into the dirt below.

Install your patio pavers starting from the lowest point on the slope and work your way up. This allows you to work with gravity by keeping the lowermost pavers as the starting point and base. Set a paver into the base of sand and gravel and tap it into place with the rubber mallet. Repeat this process for each additional piece, leaving space between for joints if you desire.

Cover the installation area with a layer of sand around an inch thick. Run the compacting machine over the surface of your patio paver installation to lock the pavers in place and push the excess sand on the top of the pavers into the joints between the stones.
