How to Build Paver Steps Near Siding

Patio pavers have many uses beyond paving patios and walkways. With careful planning and the right pavers, you can create paver steps to connect various segments of your outdoor space. With the installation of plastic sheeting to help keep moisture away from the siding, it’s possible to build paver steps to lead into your house as well. This project takes careful planning and heavy lifting, but it is something that an experienced do-it-yourselfer can accomplish.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the area where you plan to build the steps with string tied to stakes. Center the steps to the doorway. Plan so the top of the step is no more than 7 inches below the door sill. Measure the length and width of the pavers you are using to help determine the exact size of the paver steps. If you have more than one step, allow extra space for it. Figure on a 7-inch rise for each step.

    • 2

Dig out the marked area to a depth of at least 8 inches. Compact the soil with a hand tamper or soil compactor. Check that the ground is level with a carpenter’s level.

    • 3

Place plastic sheeting on the ground where you plan to build the steps. Run the sheeting up the side of the house so that it extends above the level of the top step. Tape it in place on the siding with masking tape or painter’s tape.

    • 4

Place 3/4-inch gravel over the plastic sheeting. Compact it in place. Check that it is level using a carpenter’s level.

    • 5

Mix one part Portland cement with two parts dampened sand to make a dry mortar-type base. Spread this over the prepared area to a depth of no more than 1/2 inch, using a trowel. Smooth the cement mix so it is level.

    • 6

Set the pavers for the side walls and risers into the cement mixture. Spread cement mixture between pavers as you set them to give them a mortared appearance. Try to keep the joints even as you set the pavers. Set the level on the pavers periodically to ensure the top of the step remains level.

    • 7

Add a second row of pavers, if necessary, on top of the first row to bring the step to the desired height. Spread a layer of cement mixture, then add pavers. Stagger joints to make a more stable step.

    • 8

Place a row of pavers against the front of the house in the same manner as you set the pavers in Step 6. Keep the plastic sheeting between the pavers and the siding. When you finish this step, place the level on this row of pavers and the ones you set in Steps 6 and 7. They should be level.

    • 9

Repeat this process for each additional paver step.

    • 10

Apply mortar adhesive to the top of the pavers. Set large flat pavers on top of each riser so that a small amount overhangs the front of each riser. Check for level as you set each step top in place.

    • 11

Cut off excess plastic that shows above the steps using a utility knife. Seal the edges where the pavers touch the siding with silicone caulking.
