Cut off all of the smaller branches located on the lower part of the tree with a pruner. Grip the pruner over top of the small branches 2-feet from the trunk of the tree, and cut them off. Do not cut the branches off from the tree trunk because this can cause disease in the tree.
Tie a safety harness around the tree and connect the safety harness around your midsection. Climb up the tree with the strap on your saddle - the strap is designed for tree climbing. Push your way up to the location of the branch.
Place the chainsaw 2 feet from the tree trunk under the branch that will be cut . Turn on the saw and cut from the bottom up one-third of the way through the branch. Turn off the saw and position it on top of the branch, 3 inches down from the bottom cut.
Turn on the saw and cut straight down through the branch 3 inches from the first cut. Cut straight through the branch until you are level with the cut made from the underside.
Pull down slightly on the branch and allow the branch to fall away without tearing the bark of the trunk. Move up and around the tree, and cut off any other branches in the same manner as you cut the first one, and carefully slide down the tree upon completion.
