How to Plant a Small Avocodo Tree in a Small Space

As avocado trees can grow up to 80 feet tall, grow a dwarf variety if you're filling a small space or container. There are several choices available. "Wurtz" avocados are small trees that produce medium-sized fruit. "Sharwill" avocados are known for having excellent fruit, but they tend to have a spreading habit which won't work well if you have limited growing space. "Fuerte" trees produce buttery fruit. "Hass" avocados are commonly found in grocery stores and have a nutty taste. "Pinkerton" is the avocado to choose if you live in a cooler climate but still want a heavy crop.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant avocado trees between March and June.

    • 2

Choose a planting location that is protected from strong winds. Avocados freeze when the temperatures get too low. Growing the tree next to a brick wall will protect the plant. Paint the wall white, if possible, to reflect sunlight.

    • 3

Use loose, sandy loam soil for the plant. Avocado trees need well-draining soil. It doesn't matter if it's acidic or alkaline. If growing in containers, use a planting mix mixed with topsoil.

    • 4

Dig a hole that is as deep as the roots and a slight bit wider. Even though you're working with a small space, you need to have enough room for the roots to grow and spread. Loosen the roots gently if the plant is rootbound. Trim off roots growing in circles. Put the tree in the hole gently and fill in around it with topsoil.

    • 5

Spread 2 to 4 inches of mulch over the root mass. Keep it at least 6 inches away from the trunk. Water until moist. Allow the top of the soil to dry out slightly, then soak the roots well. The frequency of watering depends on how dry your climate is. Root rot is a main cause of death for avocados, so never allow the soil to be wet.

    • 6

Fertilize the dwarf tree with liquid seaweed fertilizer or a balanced food with zinc. Young trees only need 1 to 2 tsp. annually.

    • 7

Stake the tree. Dwarf trees need the support as they grow. Secure a landscape tie around the trunk and secure it with stakes in the ground. Keep it supported for six months to a year.
