How to Prune a One Year Old Oak Bonsai

Cork oak, the most popular for use as an oak bonsai, features deep-fissured bark and leaves that curl and feature spiny edges. Blue oak, another popular choice, features blue-green leaves.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut away branches that grow downward, inward, or that cross other branches. Use scissors or branch cutters to trim these branches. Apply tree wound sealant to the branches that you have cut.

    • 2

Pinch the tips with your fingers, leaving only one or two leaves. Remove the largest shoots. Pinching with your fingers allows for a more natural appearance.

    • 3

Use the scissors to remove the excess roots so the tree sits flat. With a chopstick or bamboo skewer, untangle the roots and rake through them to remove some of the soil. Leave the root hairs in place. These work to absorb water.
