How to Locate Forest Pansy Trees

The "Forest Pansy" is a cultivar, taken from the native Eastern Redbud tree, Cercis canadensis. Improvements in the form of the tree, color of the leaves and flowers, make the "Forest Pansy" an ideal landscaping specimen for a variety of areas. Purple, heart shaped leaves and long-lasting, early spring flowers before leaves develop make this a desirable addition to a lawn or wooded area. This understory tree needs only partial sun, making it easy to locate in the landscape.

  Establish the "Forest Pansy" as a focal point in the front yard. Place near the entry area to draw attention. This is particularly effective for front doors which might escape casual detection. As a specimen, the "Forest Pansy" can assist in directing traffic while adding interest and beauty to the front lawn.

  Add the "Forest Pansy" cultivar in groupings in a bare area of the lawn. The red leafed Redbud grows quickly and often has a multi-stemmed trunk, adding to its' ornamental value. Reddish, purple leaves offer a bold color statement in autumn, when their colors become deeper and more intense. Leaf color is more spectacular when located in full sun, however, in hotter Southern areas of the U.S., this tree may benefit from afternoon shade.

  Plant the "Forest Pansy" In an island garden bed, surrounded by complementary or contrasting flowers and foliage of other plant material. Early spring blooming bulbs in pinks, purples and whites along with azaleas or "Pieris japonica" effectively complete this design.

  Include the red leafed redbud in a natural or partially shaded woodland area. This tree reaches 20 to 30 feet at maturity and functions well under tall, established forest trees. The "Forest Pansy" provides shade for ferns and hellebores planted below. Colorful foliage offers color in areas where this may be lacking.
