Select a planting site for a neem tree. This tree is only thrives in USDA Hardiness zones 10 and higher, so most gardeners must grow it in a greenhouse. Neem produces its best foliage in full sun, but it can also tolerate partial shade.
Mix a light soil mixture for neem that offers good drainage. A good mixture for this tree consists of 2 parts loam, 2 parts perlite and 1 part peat moss.
Fill the largest available planting container with the soil mixture and remove the neem tree from its nursery container. Dig a hole in the soil and place the plant in the container so the soil line is even with or slightly below the level of the soil. Pat down soil around the plant and water with a least an inch of water so the soil is thoroughly moist but not soggy.
Allow the soil to dry slightly before watering with another inch water. Repeat this step once a week during the growing season. Stop watering when the neem plant goes dormant for the winter.
Apply a balanced fertilizer to the neem tree once a month during the growing season, following the manufacturer's instructions. Discontinue the fertilization program when the tree goes dormant.
Repot the neem tree in winter when it outgrows its container. Prune any diseased or dead growth from the tree, using the gardening shears.
