How to Kill Tree Fungus

Fungi cause tree trunks and branches to decay and can damage large parts of a tree in a short time. Wood becomes weak, and the storage of sapwood is compromised. Oak root fungus, for example, causes a white rot. Another common foliage fungus is powdery mildew, with spores that look like white spots on the surface of leaves. You must kill tree fungi to improve the health of the tree.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray trees affected by fungi like powdery mildew with a wettable sulfur. Combine 2 to 4 pounds per 100 gallons of water in a sprayer tank. Mix well. Spray on the affected tree.

    • 2

Control leaf spot fungi by spraying fungicides before the disease builds up. Follow the instructions on the label, applying the preventative spray on green, healthy trees.

    • 3

Use careful pruning practices. Making ragged cuts will open the tree to fungi and other disease. Instead, cut the branches just outside the branch collar, or swollen area where the branches connect. Avoid removing large limbs from older trees, because there will be substantial wounds.
