How to Kill Runners on a Tree of Heaven

The tree of heaven, also known by its botanical name Ailanthus Altissima, is a rapidly growing deciduous tree native to China and Taiwan. It can also be found throughout much of the U.S., and is classified as an invasive species in many areas. Although the tree is relatively short lived, its fast growth and hardy nature enable it to easily out-compete native plants. It spreads via seed, root sprouts and runners, and its aggressive growth habit makes it difficult to manage, although it can be adequately controlled if the proper guidelines are followed.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the proper herbicide for your application. The U.S. Forest Service recommends a systemic herbicide such as triclopyr or glyphosate.

    • 2

Evaluate the trees being targeted for removal. Seedlings can often be removed mechanically, but new growth from runners will need to be controlled with the proper application of herbicide.

    • 3

Apply the herbicide to the leaves, taking care to avoid spreading it on any nearby plants. Systemic herbicides such as glyphosate will severely injure or kill any plants with which they come into contact.

    • 4

Use a hand axe, saw or machete to make several downward angled cuts around the base of the tree. Make one cut for every inch of tree diameter, then add an additional cut. Ensure the cuts are spaced evenly around the trunk.

    • 5

Spray a small amount of fully concentrated herbicide evenly into each cut, taking care to avoid run-off.
