Select the proper herbicide for your application. The U.S. Forest Service recommends a systemic herbicide such as triclopyr or glyphosate.
Evaluate the trees being targeted for removal. Seedlings can often be removed mechanically, but new growth from runners will need to be controlled with the proper application of herbicide.
Apply the herbicide to the leaves, taking care to avoid spreading it on any nearby plants. Systemic herbicides such as glyphosate will severely injure or kill any plants with which they come into contact.
Use a hand axe, saw or machete to make several downward angled cuts around the base of the tree. Make one cut for every inch of tree diameter, then add an additional cut. Ensure the cuts are spaced evenly around the trunk.
Spray a small amount of fully concentrated herbicide evenly into each cut, taking care to avoid run-off.
