Position two wooden stakes on opposite sides of a large tree. Place the stakes outside of the root ball or at least 3 feet away from the trunk.
Use a hammer to pound the stakes into the ground. Be sure to reach a depth of between 18 and 24 inches.
Use your tape measure to measure 5 feet of wire and use wire cutters to cut the wire. Repeat this process to obtain one more piece of 5-ft. wire. Hold a tree cushion against the trunk of the tree. Position the tree cushion at least 3 feet from the base of the tree. Attach a tree tie to the truck of the tree over the tree cushion. The tree cushion will protect the tree bark from damage caused by friction from the tree tie.
Feed the two pieces of wiring through the tree tie. Tile the other ends of the wiring around the stakes.
Twist the end of each wire around each stake. Cut off the ends of the wires with your wire cutters. Check the wires to ensure they are connected at the same height to each stake to ensure proper tree growth.
