How to Trim Crabapples

Crabapple trees are beautiful ornamentals that produce pink and white flowers followed by small, tart fruits. A crabapple tree can grow in a wide variety of environments from mild to those with heavy winters. The fruits are not usually eaten fresh, but can be made into jelly and used in baked goods with sweetener. Crabapple trees require very little pruning over their lifetime.

Instructions

    • 1

Prune your crabapple tree in the later winter or early spring before it starts to bud.

    • 2

Cut branches and limbs with your pruning shears or saw at a 30 degree angle to the main trunk of the tree for better wound healing.

    • 3

Remove any branch or limb that appears diseased or damage at any time of year. A disease can spread rapidly harming the entire tree if not removed and a damaged limb could further injure the tree or fall and hurt a person or property.

    • 4

Thin out branches that are crossing other branches to allow more light into the center of the tree.
