Mark the place where you want the hedge. Different pines will grow to different heights and widths, so account for this when making your hedge.
Determine how many plants you will need to make your hedge. If you are planting dwarf pines, for example, you may want to plant them closer together than if you are planting standard pines, which spread as they grow. Most pines grow in a pyramid shape, so consider this when designing your hedge.
Dig a trench for the hedge that is approximately as deep as the root ball of each plant.
Place the plants in the trench at the interval you prefer. Small, formal hedges should be planted between 6 and 8 inches apart, according to Purdue University. Plant larger hedges between 18 and 30 inches apart. If you are creating a tall screen that will require little trimming, plant the hedges up to 6 feet apart.
Fill the trench in with soil and compost. Mulch with wood chips or another mulch you prefer.
Water the hedges thoroughly and deeply after planting and then regularly as they start to take root.
Prune the hedge back on a regular basis, not allowing it to grow too tall before starting to prune. Snip or pinch the bud or shoot on the tip of every branch. A more formal shape can then be made with pruning shears. Perform this process once a year.
